Adopt

The Adoption Process

Our adoption process is simple and we’re here to help every step of the way.

1. Start by filling in an application and waiting for one of our team to get in touch.

2. If your application is successful, we’ll arrange a time for an informal video call.

3. We’ll then arrange for one of our volunteer home-checkers to carry out a virtual home check.

4. Once your home check is complete, you’ll hear from the team whether your application has been successful and

we will then reserve a dog for you. At this stage, we can also request cat tests etc.

5. Throughout the process, we’ll advise you on the next possible travel date for your dog. Once reserved, we’ll start preparing them

to travel. If you have applied for a UK based dog, we can arrange meet ups and handovers at this stage.

6. We’ll request payment and ask you to sign your adoption contract before your new dog travels.

The Costs

We try to keep our adoption fees as low as possible.

The fees are £595 for Spanish dogs and £400 for UK born dogs, which are donations towards the cost of helping each dog.

Unfortunately, costs are very high so while this doesn’t cover all the expenses, it does help us to keep rescuing dogs and making sure more are safe.

Every dog has a microchip and passport, is vaccinated, disease tested and neutered (if appropriate) before travelling to their new homes.

F A Q

The first step to adopting a dog is completing our application form. If successful, one of the team will be in touch to arrange a video call with you. We’ll then sort a virtual home check and reserve the dog ready to travel.

Adoption fees are £595 for Spanish dogs and includes a microchip, passport, vaccinations, parasite treatment, tests for Southern European diseases, neutering (if appropriate) and transport to the UK.

For UK born dogs, the fees are £400 per dog.

Timescales are usually between 2-6 weeks depending on various factors. If you have any holidays coming up, house moves etc, please factor this in as we won’t be able to reserve a dog until you are in a position to adopt.

Most of our dogs travel straight to their new homes but we do also have UK born dogs and dogs in UK foster from time to time. You can see which dogs are already in the UK via their profiles.

You can see which dogs have already been tested with cats via their profiles but it may be possible to cat test other dogs you are interested in as well so please ask, and this can be done later on as part of the adoption process. Even if dogs have been cat tested, we recommend gradual and careful introductions in the home to ensure things go smoothly.

Our Spanish dogs are tested for leishmaniasis, filariasis, ehrlichia, lyme disease, anaplasmosis and brucellosis.

Our aim is to find homes for our dogs in the UK but we will also consider other nearby countries in some circumstances (e.g France, Ireland, Spain, Portugal). We are not able to transport dogs to countries further afield such as the USA.

If you’ve adopted from us before, via this rescue or another, we may be able to fast track the adoption process for you. If you haven’t filled in an application form for The Setter & Pointer Project before, please do and we’ll be in touch. If you’ve already filled in a form, drop us a line and we can talk about next steps!

Sadly we do get a lot of applications and it’s just not possible for us to reply to everyone. We wish this wasn’t the case as we know how frustrating it can be trying to adopt a dog and not hearing back, but we have to spend our time wisely to help as many dogs as possible.

Sometimes our emails do end up in junk mail though so please check there too if you haven’t heard from us.

Yes, you can apply for another dog by dropping us an email at adopt@setterpointerproject.org.uk or using the Contact Us form, as long as you have filled in an application this year already.
