What is the adoption process?
The first step to adopting a dog is completing our application form. If successful, one of the team will be in touch to arrange a video call with you. We’ll then sort a virtual home check and reserve the dog ready to travel.
How much does it cost to adopt a dog?
Adoption fees are £595 for Spanish dogs and includes a microchip, passport, vaccinations, parasite treatment, tests for Southern European diseases, neutering (if appropriate) and transport to the UK.
For UK born dogs, the fees are £400 per dog.
How long does the adoption process take?
Timescales are usually between 2-6 weeks depending on various factors. If you have any holidays coming up, house moves etc, please factor this in as we won’t be able to reserve a dog until you are in a position to adopt.
Can I meet a dog before adopting?
Most of our dogs travel straight to their new homes but we do also have UK born dogs and dogs in UK foster from time to time. You can see which dogs are already in the UK via their profiles.
Can your dogs live with cats?
You can see which dogs have already been tested with cats via their profiles but it may be possible to cat test other dogs you are interested in as well so please ask, and this can be done later on as part of the adoption process. Even if dogs have been cat tested, we recommend gradual and careful introductions in the home to ensure things go smoothly.
Have the dogs been disease tested?
Our Spanish dogs are tested for leishmaniasis, filariasis, ehrlichia, lyme disease, anaplasmosis and brucellosis.
Which countries can dogs be adopted in?
Our aim is to find homes for our dogs in the UK but we will also consider other nearby countries in some circumstances (e.g France, Ireland, Spain, Portugal). We are not able to transport dogs to countries further afield such as the USA.
What if we've adopted before?
If you’ve adopted from us before, via this rescue or another, we may be able to fast track the adoption process for you. If you haven’t filled in an application form for The Setter & Pointer Project before, please do and we’ll be in touch. If you’ve already filled in a form, drop us a line and we can talk about next steps!
Why haven’t I heard back from you yet?
Sadly we do get a lot of applications and it’s just not possible for us to reply to everyone. We wish this wasn’t the case as we know how frustrating it can be trying to adopt a dog and not hearing back, but we have to spend our time wisely to help as many dogs as possible.
Sometimes our emails do end up in junk mail though so please check there too if you haven’t heard from us.
Can I apply for another dog? Do I need to fill out a form each time?
Yes, you can apply for another dog by dropping us an email at adopt@setterpointerproject.org.uk or using the Contact Us form, as long as you have filled in an application this year already.
